"...With all your offerings you must offer salt."

(Leviticus 2, 13)

Salt inside the container:

The Khalah on our Shabbat table is a replacement to the offerings made by the priests on the Temple four corners alter. The salt that we spread on the Khalah is a way to remember the act of salting the offerings as they was salted at the Temple. The shape of the container is like a four corners alter to bring the alter onto our table.
