In
the Midrashic account, the nation of Israel was compelled to agree to
accept the Torah (G-d overturned upon them Mount Sinai as a huge vessel,
in Hebrew: "kafa aleihem har k'gigit", TB Avoda Zara 2b). The design of
this wine cup follows this story. Moses stands with the Torah on top of
the overturned mountain. As Israel was forced to accept the Torah, so
are we forced to hold the cup in the air and to finish the wine. By holding
the cup we are following the verse: "I held him fast, I would not
let him go..." (Song of Songs 3, 4). I am holding and keeping the
Torah for ever.
